Samsung Returns to the Folding Phone

2/23/2020

Earlier this month, Samsung released its new Galaxy Z Flip smartphone, which is a variant of the company’s other foldable phone, the Galaxy Fold. Rather than folding from a tablet to a phone, the Galaxy Z Flip phone folds in half like a flip phone for portability. Although the initial release of the Galaxy Fold a year ago was met with disappointment and criticism, the Galaxy Z Flip seems like a step in the right direction. The phone uses an extremely thin piece of glass which allows for the screen to fold.

Besides opening and closing, the phone can be folded at almost any angle, allowing the phone to stand by itself. Although the folding mechanism is one of the main features of the phone, other features also make the phone serviceable. The display is FHD+ and 6.7-inches when unfolded. Additionally, there are two rear cameras that can also be used as selfie-cameras when the phone is folded. Although the camera is not one of the best found on phones, it is still reportedly good enough for what most consumers would use it for. The specifications of the phone are also decent, but nothing stands out. However, what may stand out is the price; the phone starts at $1,380. Additionally, some point to the thin glass as something that could raise issues with the phone’s durability since it could cause scratches and dents to be more frequent and damaging. Because the phone still could have improvements in terms of specifications and durability, it may not be super popular. However, if Samsung continues to make newer generations of this phone in the future, it could eventually be popular among average consumers.
