The Fifth Generation of Consoles

9/20/2020

A few months after Sony revealed the Playstation 5 in June, the company has recently given all details regarding the console during the PS5 Showcase event. What shocked everyone during the first reveal was how it looked; the console seems futuristic with white and black colors. Additionally, one version of the console called the Digital Edition is disc-less. While this means that users will have to buy games digitally and not be able to use the console as a Blu-ray player, it also means they will only have to spend $399 instead of the $499 for the regular edition.

As it’s been seven years since the release of the PS4, the PS5 has impressive and improved specifications, including a custom-built SSD that may have processing speeds that are over 100 times faster than those of the PS4. As for other features, the PS5’s new GPU will allow for backwards compatibility, which was a key feature missing in the PS4.
During the PS5 Showcase event, Sony also revealed new games that will be released for the console, and most notably, a new Harry Potter game called “Hogwarts Legacy” has generated lots of attention.

With all of this taken into account, it is unsurprising to see the success of the console despite it being released later this year on November 12. Within a day, the console was sold out of preorders. In fact, when Walmart released another round of preorders the next day, the PS5 was sold out in minutes. Additionally, Amazon announced that some orders may not arrive on November 12 because of how many people ordered it. As a result, Sony has pledged to release more consoles for preorder, but it's hard to imagine how the company can keep up with the demand prior to the actual release.

While Sony has generated quite the success, Microsoft is also set to release its new Xbox console in November. Although the PlayStation 4 gained much more sales than the Xbox One, the new Xbox Series X is slightly more powerful than the PS5. Additionally, Microsoft is releasing a cheaper version of their next-generation console called the Xbox Series S, which isn’t as powerful but will start at only $299. With this cheaper price point, Microsoft may be able to attract more consumers. However, with the way the PS5 is doing currently, it seems Sony may still be able to take the crown.
